What Is Craft Beer?

Craft Beer is brewed in small-scale, independent, beer-centric breweries that focus on the use of premium ingredients and innovative brewing techniques to create unique, high quality beers. It is usually free of additives and chemicals, and may also be brewed in a non-filtered, unpasteurized style that preserves the natural flavor of the beer.

The term “craft beer” was first coined in the mid-1980s as microbreweries began popping up around the country and taking on giant alcohol conglomerates like Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors for refrigerator space at consumer grocery stores. It wasn’t long before popular drinks like the bitter, hoppy India Pale Ale and boozy, viscous bourbon barrel-aged stout helped fuel explosive growth for the industry.

Today, more than 8,000 breweries are operating in the United States. Many of them are producing more types of beers than ever before, and consumers have a seemingly unlimited choice of beers to try.

Beer is made from four basic ingredients: barley (or other grains), water, hops and yeast. In the hands of a skilled brew master, these simple ingredients can be transformed into a wide variety of distinct beer styles and flavors that are a testament to the enduring appeal of this time-honored, fermented beverage.

Many breweries offer tours and samples to help educate their customers about the brewing process. They also often host events like tap takeovers or brewery releases, which give beer drinkers a chance to sample the latest brews. In addition, breweries are helping the world become more healthy by offering beers with added benefits like gut health and B vitamins.
