What Is Craft Beer?
Craft Beer is brewed in small amounts with quality ingredients, using traditional brewing techniques. It’s often made with a combination of traditional and non-traditional ingredients to make unique beers that are interesting to drink.
There is a long history of small, independently owned craft breweries in the United States. Some of the first were founded in the early 1900s, and they are rooted in European brewing traditions. The arrival of Prohibition in 1920, however, sent many of them into a decline.
The number of breweries in the United States today is much higher than it was even five years ago, but there’s still a long way to go before the country has reached its full potential as a beer drinking nation. Part of that has to do with the increasing consolidation among breweries and the rising popularity of lighter lager beers.
Tax Breaks For Small Breweries
The craft brewer industry has received a special tax break that allows them to grow smaller and get lower federal beer excise taxes, but there is a growing movement in Congress to amend this definition. A bill introduced by Oregon Senator Ron Wyden would give breweries a break depending on their annual production.
Craft brewers also often support their communities through donations of beer, product donations, volunteerism and sponsorship of local events. This is a different approach than that of many macro brewers, who tend to be more profit-driven and use cheaper ingredients like corn or rice.
