What Is Craft Beer?

Craft Beer is a broad category of brewing encompassing a wide range of beers. It includes many styles and ingredient choices, from traditional brews to experimenting with unusual flavor combinations and brewing techniques.

A defining characteristic of craft beer is that it’s made with quality ingredients and often involves a lot of hard work, small quantities, and high-quality brewing. It’s also a very social type of business, with brewers often involved in their communities through philanthropy, product donations, volunteerism and sponsorship of events.

It’s a kaleidoscope of flavors, from the classic styles to brewing techniques that make slightly sour ales or entirely transform beers through barrel aging. It’s a great adventure for any beer lover, and can even help you find some health benefits (thanks to the antioxidants, protein and vitamin B complex)!

Independent and Traditional

For the most part, a brewery must be independently owned to be considered a craft brewer. This means that the brewery must be able to prove that no more than 25 percent of its total beverage alcohol volume derives from beers made by a member of a large macro brewing conglomerate.

Small and Independent

For many years, the Brewers Association defined craft brewing as being a brewery that produced less than two million barrels a year. This number coincided with a tax break for small brewers.

The Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams beers, peaked over that mark in 2010. Today, it’s one of the most recognized and successful independently made brewers in the world, and puts craft beer in front of more drinkers than ever before.
